In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Captive’s Choice.”

You’ve been kidnapped and given a choice: would you rather be stranded on an island, dropped into an unknown forest, or locked in a strange building?”

This prompt is pretty much “where do you want to die?”

I’m not a great swimmer, I hate seafood, and sand in your junk sucks so the island is out.

I’ve seen enough tv and movies to know that strange buildings blow up and/or are filled with terrorists. No, thanks.

I have to go with forest. I’ve seen/read The Hunger Games, so I know what can happen in the woods, but in real woods I feel safe. If I’m in the woods in the north, I’ll know what to avoid and what is edible. Less so in my current home in Texas. Actually, it was one of the first things that made me feel uncomfortable here. I didn’t know the plants or the insects. I didn’t know what stung (everything) or what I could use to brush my teeth if things got bad (dogwood in the north). I DO know what side of the tree moss grows on (north, mostly), I know to mark trees, and I always carry a knife. And maybe I’ll befriend some woodland creature, and he’ll tell me the secrets of the ages. Then when they find me – shivering and delirious – I’ll be cuddling a rock and calling it Thumper.
